Etiology

  • Transitional cell cancer of bladder, ureters and/or renal pelvis

Risk Factors

  • Age > 35
  • Male
  • Hx smoking→ transitional cell ca
  • Squamous cell if chronic catheter, hx schistosomiasis, or chronic foreign body (rare)

Symptoms

  • Persistent gross blood (more blood, more suggestive cancer)
  • Urinary urgency and frequency (bladder)
  • Pain if clots, retention

Physical Exam Findings

  • Rarely mass (renal, bladder) from primary or metastasis
  • Typically no overt findings on exam
