Etiology

  • Source of pain originates outside of ear, including: cervical spine, TMJ, cancer of the oropharynx (e.g. blocking eustachian tube), other.

Symptoms

  • Additional symptoms may suggest primary source of problem (e.g. pain worse w/opening & closing of mouth if TMJ related).

Physical Exam Findings

  • Exam may yield insight as to primary source of problem (e.g. neck or oral findings if pathology located there).
